A time to honor veterans past and present

Even the cold and blistery wind couldn't stop parade watchers in downtown Ottawa on Saturday, Nov. 8., for the Veteran's Day festivities. Veteran's Day is a holiday that hits home for a lot of people who have had loved ones serve in a war. Family members of fallen soldiers gathered in the streets, some with tears in their eyes and others wearing the bravest smiles they could muster.

After dominating the Southwestern Moundbuilders 73-3 on Nov. 8 at home, the Braves football team played their final 2008 season game at Sterling versus the Warriors on Nov. 15. The outcome, however, was not what they had hoped for: a 17-13 loss, dropping the team to 20th in the national rankings, just short of making the playoffs.

There will be a dramatic shift in power in Washington when a new President and Congress assume power in January, marking the return of a Democratic Party that had been in the minority for most of the decade. The election of Barack Obama sees the Democrats control the presidency for the first time since 2000 and only their fourth victory in the past 11 elections.

Diabetes affects those of all ages

College students have typically referred to diabetes as "an old person's disease" but, as more and more young people are being diagnosed with it every day, there may be a swing in awareness coming.  Medicinenet.com describes diabetes as a chronic disease associated with abnormally high levels of the sugar glucose in the blood, caused by a body's improper use of insulin or inadequate sensitivity of cells to the action of insulin.
